Jim Fitzpatrick - Tai Chi/Qigong/Oriental Medicine

Following undergraduate Health Studies at Waterloo, Jim received a Master of Science degree from Samra University of Oriental medicine in 1995 and was certified nationally in 1994 and California in 1995. He interned in China in 1995 and 1996, including at Beijing traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) hospital before it was opened to foreign students. Jim helped establish and taught the acupuncture program as well as taiji qigong at the Toronto School of TCM, the first comprehensive program in Toronto. An ardent practitioner of Wu style tai chi chuan since 1986, Jim started teaching with David Chiu, first disciple to the head of the Wu family, in 2001. A clinical doctorate in integrative medicine, healthy aging, and longevity from Yo San University in Los Angeles confers the title of primary care physician in California. There is no doctor title available to TCM practitioners in Canada at this time. Jim's thesis; TCM research methods, complex systems science, and interoperability, helps clarify some of the challenges of TCM research and the importance of establishing an outcome measure for the profession. The preferred method to clinical practice is a traditional, integral approach that includes prioritizing lifestyle changes, dietary and herbal medicine, acupuncture and hand manipulation techniques, tai chi, and qigong meditation practice.
