Traditional Chinese medicine is a complete medical system that takes decades of study and practice to learn. It is a holistic approach to health that seeks to link signs and symptoms to an underlying pattern and then treats not only the symptoms but their underlying root.

Diagnosis
The ancient Chinese steered away from dissection and invitro studies and developed a system of careful observation in living beings. Sensations of temperature, colour, moisture, region of pain, season or time of day affected, and emotional tendencies are some examples of the information that may be weighed into a diagnosis.
Acupuncture
In ancient China, medical arts were based on the Taoist world view of harmony and balance between Yin & Yang, and the cultivation of Vitality, Energy, and Spirit. It is a holistic paradigm that looks at symptoms, not in isolation, but in relation to the whole being, and sees each aspect of one's being as a reflection of the whole. 'The Yellow Emperor's Classic of Internal Medicine' laid out a map of the human body consisting of channels of energy with points of access where disease could enter, but also from where disease could exit. These points were accessed with bamboo shards and later with metal needles. Today, the theory underlying acupuncture is exactly the same as it was thousands of years ago. Although this theory may seem archaic at first, it is the only truly effective approach to acupuncture treatment.
Herbal Remedies
Chinese herbal medicine and medicinal diet incorporates some 50,000 items in folk practice and a clinical material medica of about 5,000 substances that represent countless doctors experience over many centuries. Working formulas date back two thousand years. The effect of each substance is analysed in relation to its partners in a formula. A formula may contain any number of substances, generally from about two to twenty. Just as resistance to the flu may be likened to soldiers at the gate depending on supply lines from base, a herbal formula may contain leaders, deputies, assistants, and guides that work as a team to meet a unique circumstance. There are several ways to administer the medicine; natural ingredients, prepared granules, capsules, tablets, tinctures, and pastes. Healing Arts Centre will now emphasize freeze-dried, prepared granules to be mixed with hot water.
